How to choose between Everything, Windows Search, and PowerToys Run in 2026
Windows users often talk about search as if one tool should do everything. That is usually the wrong assumption. Everything, Windows Search, and PowerToys Run each win in a different lane, and picking the right one is mostly about being honest about what you are actually searching for.
The official docs make the split fairly clear once you stop looking for a single winner: Windows Search is platform breadth, Everything is filename speed, and PowerToys Run is a quick-launch action surface.
Choose Everything if file recall is the real problem
If your daily pain is locating files and folders instantly, Everything is usually the strongest choice. Its speed and directness are the point, and its latest download tracks show a project still focused on that job above all else.
Choose Windows Search if you need system-level breadth
Windows Search is the better fit when you want broad operating-system integration and indexed coverage across common file and data types. It is not always the fastest-feeling option, but it is built into the wider platform story.
Choose PowerToys Run if you want actions, not just search
PowerToys Run is strongest when your habit is launching apps, doing quick calculations, running commands, or extending the experience with plugins. It is closer to a lightweight launcher than a pure file-search tool.
Use more than one if your habits genuinely differ
Many good Windows setups use Everything for files and PowerToys Run for actions while leaving Windows Search in place for system-wide coverage. The mistake is forcing one tool to be your entire philosophy when your tasks clearly split across categories.
Common mistakes
- Expecting a launcher to replace a dedicated file-indexing utility.
- Judging Windows Search only on raw speed instead of platform integration.
- Installing all three without deciding what each one is for.
Bottom line
A strong Windows setup often stops searching for one perfect search tool. Pick the surface that matches the job, and your machine will feel faster even before the benchmarks say anything.
